Teeth Whitening

August 29, 2018

The most conservative and popular cosmetic dental treatment available. To have a brighter and whiter smile means more confidence in your day to day life, interaction with people, making a good first impression and a rejuvenation of your smile. Yellowing or darkening of your teeth happens with time and can be caused by diet (tea, coffee, red wine, coloured food), smoking, ageing, trauma and some medications.

The outer layer of your tooth is called enamel. The teeth whitening or peroxide gel can help to reduce the discolouration within the enamel by penetrating into these microscopic holes on the surface of the enamel. The peroxide gel extracts the pigment molecules in the enamel that causes the teeth discolouration resulting in a whiter and younger appearance.

There are two main ways of whitening your teeth:

In Office Teeth Whitening. This can whiten your teeth in one visit usually 1-2 hour appointment. The procedure involves isolating your teeth from the gums and lips using a rubber coating around the margins of your teeth and retractors to protect the lips. The teeth whitening gel is then applied to the surface of your teeth and the Zoom whitening light is turned on to help activate the peroxide gel. This is left for a period of 15min before a fresh solution is placed. This is repeated 3 to 4 times which will result in a whiter smile.

Take Home Teeth Whitening. An impression of your teeth are taken and custom trays are made. We will show you how to apply the whitening gel to the trays. The trays can be worn during the night while you are asleep or can be worn during the day. After 2-3 weeks of wearing the trays with the peroxide gel, your teeth will be whiter. Both procedures will whiten your teeth. The In Office Whitening will whiten your teeth in one visit whereas the Take Home Teeth Whitening will achieve the same result in 2-3 weeks. The degree of whitening will vary from person to person. Sensitivity is common and varies from person to person. But is usually not long lasting. Desensitising gel can be used after or Tooth Mousse can be applied before the procedure to reduce the sensitivity.
